The Constitution With Quill Pen

Can the US Constitution be changed?

Yes!  The original text can’t be changed, but amendments can be added to the document.  The founding fathers wanted it to be difficult to change the constitution.  The rule to start an amendment can be done on one of two ways.

1- The House and Senate must vote a two thirds majority for an amendment to be drafted.

2- Two thirds of the states may vote for a Constitutional Convention where an amendment can be drafted.

Ratification

After an amendment is drafted, it must be voted for by three fourths of the states.  The states may have their own legislative body vote or they can convene a special convention for this purpose

Ease of Change

As a safeguard to our liberties, the Constitution was made difficult to change.  That is why is has lasted so long and provided for so much freedom.
