Cooperation vs CompetitionIt sounds a lot nicer to cooperate with someone than to compete with them. Governments are instituted for the very reason of bringing a large group of competing wills together and establishing order. As a large group, cooperation can be difficult and that is one of the main reasons we need government. A society without cooperation would simply be anarchy and chaos. Where to Draw the Line? Proponents of socialism and communism promote the idea of cooperation over competition. They say it is unfair that some people are going to lose in the competition. Instead, they theorize, we should find a way to let everyone win. How do you keep people from feeling things are unfair and that they are all winning? Their solution is to tightly control wealth accumulation and try to keep everyone as even as possible. What happens -- Cause and Effect People have no incentive to work hard. When people are rewarded the same as someone else regardless of their work output, they soon decide to get by with the least production. Why? People realize that if they work more than someone else and get the same reward that they are actually worse off. In effect, you are only hurting yourself by working harder. Working for Love People say that not everyone is motivated by money. This statement is true, but it doesn't convey everything about work motivation. What would happen if we all did the work that we love and worked as much as we liked and were all rewarded the same? Receiving an equal reward wouldn't matter because we all love our work and are motivated correctly. Would this type of society be abundant and produce a good quality of life? The short answer is no. There are many undesirable jobs that nobody would choose. Most of us would decide to work a lot less hours and spend much more time in recreation. The effect would be a society that had a difficult time motivating people to do undesirable jobs, difficult jobs, and to work long hard hours. You wouldn't be able to motivate people to do undesirable and difficult jobs. In reality, many jobs would not be filled or wouldn't be performed very well. In the end, society would greatly suffer from not being able to get the best output from the people. Demotivation sources are especially cumbersome when you take into account the losses of the highly skilled and gifted. Is it nice to work for love? It is, but that doesn't mean you will shovel #$%^ 10 hours a day five days a week for the love of it. In socialistic and communist countries, this problem has been solved by compelling people to take these jobs under threat of jail or other punishments. The most minute details are planned by the government making it difficult to ever change jobs or even to upgrade simple safety protocol. You could be forced to take a dangerous job or unhealthy job as a way to further the countries goals. In return, people do not give it their best effort. Would you? Motivation Keys It seems so simple, but people are motivated by things that will improve their life. It makes sense that you should get a better reward for doing your best work. A competitive system allows one to take pride in their work and have a sense of accomplishment.
