Sacredness of the Constitution

The prophet Joseph Smith declared that the constitution is a holy document prepared to lay the foundation of a free society.

In the Doctrine and Covenants section 76-80.  We read.

76- And again I say unto you, those who have been scattered by their enemies, is is my will that they should continue to importune for redress, and redemption, by the hands of those who are placed as rulers and are in authority over you—
77- According to the laws and constitution of the people, which I have suffered to be established, and should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh, according to just and holy principles;
78- That every man may act in doctrine and principle pertaining to futurity, according to the moral agency which I have given unto him, that every man may be accountable for his own sins in the day of judgement.
79- Therefore, it is not right that any man should be in bondage one to another.
80- And for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood.

In the Journal of Discourses (7:15) the prophet Joseph Smith also said about the Constitution that, “The time will come when the destiny of this nation will hang upon a single thread.  At that critical juncture, this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction. It will be so.”

Joseph Smith also said, “The Constitution of the United States is a glorious standard; it is founded in the wisdom of God. It is a heavenly banner.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 147.)

Another prophet, Brigham Young, said “Will the Constitution be destroyed? No: it will be held inviolate by this people.”  He then goes on to quote Joseph Smith about the constitution hanging by a thread.

The prophet John Taylor said, “When the people shall have torn to shreds the Constitution of the United States, the elders of Israel will be found holding it up to the nations of the earth, and proclaiming liberty and equal rights to all men, and extending the hand of fellowship to the oppressed of all nations.” (The Gospel Kingdom, Deseret Book Co., 1943, p. 219.)

Finally, George Q. Cannon, member of the first presidency stated, “The day will come when the Constitution and free government under it will be sustained and preserved by this people.” (JD, 23:104.
